Bristol Lulsgate (BRS / EGGD)

An introduction

Handling just over 5 million passengers a year; Bristol Lulsgate Airport may not claim to be the busiest airport in the United Kindom. However the views and touch down shots that are available make it well worth a visit.

Aer Lingus Regional, Airlinair, Air Southwest, Eastern Airways, easyJet, Flybe, Isle of Scilly Skybus, OLT, Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines & Thomson Airways are the main scheduled airlines operating into Bristol Lulsgate Airport.

Spotting location one

WINTERS LANE

Bristol’s only spotting location is perfect for photographing the active aircraft, particularly when runway 09 is use. Photos can be obtained of landing, departing and taxiing aircraft. When runway 27 is in use, photos of only the departing aircraft are obtainable and those that do not stop short on landing.

Open Photo: PH-KZT - KLM Cityhopper - Fokker F70     Open Photo: G-VZON - Aurigny Air Services - ATR 72-212A

Suitable lenses

A 300mm lens is ideal for here.

Lighting

During the winter the sun will be behind you for the duration of the whole day. However, during the summer the light will only be good up till around 4 or 5pm. That is unless you wish to take some silhouette shots.

Reaching the location

The location is only accessible by car. No public transport runs along here. In order to best describe how to get here, directions will originate from the airport Terminal.

From the airport terminal, head down North Side Road, straight over at the first round about. At the next round about, take the 1st exit onto the A38. Take the first left onto Downside Road, then the second left onto Cooks Bridle Path. Cooks Pridle Path turns slightly to the right and becomes Winters Lane. Follow the road around the end of runway 09, until you’re on the south side and you come across a layby that overlooks the airport. This is where you can park and view the aircraft.

Things to consider

You WILL need step ladders to get above the fence line in order to photograph the aircraft cleanly. The Airport Authorities have no problems with this providing your behave accordingly.

 Likelihood of being moved on

None.

Any pitfalls/advantages

It is free to park your car here for the day and should be somewhat shaded during the summer. The only disadvantages of this location is that you will need step ladders, although as mentioned above, airport authorities do allow you to use them.

Gatwick Airport (LGW / EGKK)

An introduction

Gatwick Airport is the UK’s second largest airport and the busiest single-runway airport in the world. The airport handles over 33 million passengers a year to more than 200 destinations. It’s a base to Aer Lingus, British Airways, easyjet, Flybe, Monarch Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways.

Contrary to popular belief, the airport is a great destination for aviation enthusiasts. Donbassaero, Afriqiyah, Air Atlanta Icelandic, Air Moldova, Air Zimbabwe, Cubana and Sun Country are just some of the more exotic airlines to serve London Gatwick.

As you’ll find out below; Gatwick is best visited when on easterlies (runway 08), which is used roughly 30% of the time.

——————————-

Spotting location one

LOWFIELD HEATH ROAD / 08 Arrivals & departures

Perfect for photographing the aircraft arriving on runway 08, this spot is ideal for most of the day. Everything landing at London Gatwick when on Westerlies can be shot from here. Additionally, with a little care, shots of the departing aircraft can be achieved.

     Open Photo: 5A-ONH - Afriqiyah Airways - Airbus A330-202

Suitable lenses

A 70-300mm lens is ideal for here.

Lighting

During the winter the sun will be behind you for the duration of the whole day. However, during the summer the light will only be good up till around 4 or 5pm; afterwhich you will need to walk to spotting location two / 08 crash gate.

Reaching the location

The location is a rather unsafe three mile walk from the South Terminal. However, Airparks Gatwick car parking facility is located nearby and so you may wish to use their free transfer service. Available from both the North and South terminal, this will get you to this spotting location.

Otherwise, if you wish to travel to this location by use of your own car – then you can type in RH11 0QB to your satellite navigation system which is the post code for Airparks Gatwick. When you’re on Lowfield Heath Road, head east until you see the layby area on Charlwood Road, nearby to the Flight Tavern Pub. Park your car here and walk west back up the road past Airparks Gatwick.

Things to consider

In the summer the growth of the trees may stop you from viewing all of the departing aircraft, and from here photos of said movements will not be achievable unless you manage to take a peak over the fence using a very small set of step ladders. However, from this spot you will get car roofs in the lower half of your photographs. If you choose to do this, do not leave your step ladders unattended.

Likelihood of being moved on

If shooting the arrivals then you will not be moved on from here. However, it is not recommended to go climbing in the trees to shoot the departures or to leave step ladders hanging about. This may cause the local authorities to be upset.

Any pitfalls/advantages

Your car will be parked a good 5-10 minutes away, and you will be stood along side a road that at times can be quite busy.

Spotting location two

LOWFIELD HEATH ROAD / 08 Crash Gate

Brilliant for shooting the aircraft holding for departure , the crash gate offers a superb view down the runway. Additionally, here you may also shoot the late evening arrivals as the sun will have moved around enough for them to not be backlit.

     Open Photo: TC-OBD - Onur Air - Airbus A320-232

Suitable lenses

You will need a smaller lens for the larger aircraft such as Airbus A330-300 and Boeing 747 size, however Airbus A320 and similar sized aircraft then a 70-300mm lens is perfect.

Lighting

Backlit in the morning; this location is only usable during the afternoon when the sun has moved around enough to have the sun behind you.

Reaching the location

Just like 08 arrivals, however, instead of standing south of the runway, carry on walking along Lowfield Heath Road, under the flight path until you reach the crash gate on the right hand side.

Things to consider

Do not use Step Ladders here. You will attract attention from the authorities straight away.

Likelihood of being moved on

If you do not block the Crash Gate with you car and do not use step ladders, then you will not recieve any problems and you will not be asked to move on.

Any pitfalls/advantages

On days where the weather is very good, this spot will become very busy with enthusiasts. As a result, it becomes very hard to shoot here as there are limited holes for your cameras to fit through.

Spotting location three

PERIMETER ROAD EAST / 26 Arrivals

Ideal for watching and photographing runway 26 Arrivals, perimeter road is the easiest location to reach if you do not have use of a car.

Open Photo: SX-SMU - Viking Hellas - Airbus A320-231     Open Photo: N270AX - Omni Air International - McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30

Suitable lenses

Depending on where you stand, a 70-300mm lens will be perfectly suited for this location.

Lighting

During the winter the sun will be behind you for the duration of the whole day. However, during the summer the aircraft on approach will be backlit during the early hours and the evening. It is however possible to shoot the aircraft from the other side by walking a little further up Perimeter Road East.

Reaching the location

If travelling by foot, then once inside Gatwick South Terminal; follow the signs for Concorde House. Once you’ve travelled down the flight of stairs, you’ll leave the terminal. The entrance to Concorde House will be on your right. Instead, follow Perimeter Road East, south bound until you reach the approach lights. Simply choose where you’d like to stay for the day along here.

If travelling by car, you can park in Gatwick Short Term Parking and follow the above walking directions. This however will get very expensive very quickly. Instead, you can park your car in the layby on James Watt Way and walk 20 minutes to the shooting location. To get to here using a satellite navigation system, type in “James Watt Way, RH10”.

Things to consider

Step ladders are not needed here. There is no shade in summer, but you’re a very small walk away from South Terminal should you wish to purchase any drinks and snacks.

Likelihood of being moved on

The local authorities do not like you leaning against the fence to take photos of aircraft taxiing out for departure, and may ask you to move away from the fence if you do. However, shooting arrivals from the footpath is not a problem and you will not be asked to move away from here.

Any pitfalls/advantages

Departures are not well photographed from here and would be backlit during the afternoon.

Southampton Airport (SOU / EGHI)

An introduction…

BAA Southampton Airport handles almost 2 million passengers a year, over 45,000 movements and serves over 45 European destinations.

The largest operator here is Flybe; who base up to 3 Embraer 195’s and 5 Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircrafts at the airport. The other scheduled airlines serving Southampton Airport consist of Aurigny, Blue Islands, Eastern Airways and Isles of Scilly Skybus.

Due to the close proximity to Southampton Docks, it won’t be unusual to see a few corporate jets during your visit.

Spotting location one

THE MOUND

This location is fantastic for photography. All of the airports movements are shootable from this location, no matter which runway is in use. However, Southampton Airport is best visited when the wind direction is from the South and thus runway 20 is in use. The elevation of the mound enables some good shots and in the summer months the sun will set directly behind you; giving your photos a glistening golden glow.

Open Photo: G-LSAC - Jet2 - Boeing 757-23A(WL)       Open Photo: G-ECOW - Flybe - De Havilland Canada DHC-8-402Q Dash 8

Suitable lenses

A 70-300mm lens is ideal for here, anything larger will enable you to get some nice close up detail shots.

Lighting

As briefly mentioned above; this location is suitable only during the late afternoon and evening. The location faces east and thus you will need to wait for the sun to move around.

Reaching the location

Walking from the airport terminal/short stay car park/train station, northbound along Mitchell Way you will pass the control tower and aircraft hangars. The path will come to an abrupt end. Safely walk onto the road, and follow it bend around to the right, and then to the left. You will now see on your left the mound; an excellent elevated vantage point, ideal for photographing the active aircraft.

Things to consider

There are many light posts and other obstructions that will potentially make their way into your photographs; particularly when the aircraft are taxiing along the runway.

Likelihood of being moved on

It’s really quite inconsistant here with regards to getting moved on. Sometimes you can go all day without being asked to leave, other times you’ll be asked to leave straight away. BAA don’t really like spotters visiting the airport.

Any pitfalls/advantages

There is no free parking at Southampton Airport. You will need to park in the Short Stay Car Park or travel to Southampton Airport using public transport.

________________________________________________________

Spotting location two

SHORT STAY CAR PARK

Just across from the terminal entrance is the short stay car park, clearly sign posted.  Here you will be able to photograph aircraft parked on stands 6 to 12, and those taxiing using taxiway bravo. Stands 6 to 12 are those that Eastern Airways, Isle of Scilly Skybus, Blue Islands and the Flybe Bombardier Q400s will use. Unfortuantly the Aurigny Trislanders tend to use Stand 1, and the Flybe Embraer 195 aircraft use stands 2 to 5.

Stands 1-4 and 13-14 are out of view, and aircraft parked on stand 5 are viewable but not photographable.

Open Photo: G-JECV - Flybe - De Havilland Canada DHC-8-402Q Dash 8

Suitable lenses

A small lens is needed for aircraft parked on the stands in front of you, and a larger lens (70-300mm) if you plan on shooting aircraft on the runway and  taxiway bravo.

Lighting

If you intend on photographing the aircraft on the runway and taxiway bravo, then you will need to wait until the afternoon when the sun has moved around to the west and thus is behind you.

However, if you’d like to photograph the aircraft that are on stand, or turning onto stand and are to your left hand side. Then the sun will be suitable during the early hours.

Reaching the location

Reaching this location is simple… you can either drive and park in the Short Stay Carpark itself, or if travelling by train, bus or foot then head to the airport terminal, and cross over the road to the Short Stay Carpark.

Things to consider

You will be shooting through the car park fences, and thus it is rather difficult to take photos here with the larger lenses.

Likelihood of being moved on

Again, it is fairly likely. BAA, the operators of Southampton Airport, do not like spotters in the car parks.

Any pitfalls/advantages

Not everything on the airport is photographable, however photos that are achievable are not those commonly available at other airports.
